Osteitis – the Disease
Osteomyelitis is an infectious inflammation of the bone marrow. Increasingly, the term "osteitis" is used, since all parts of the bone are affected by the inflammation.
Without adequate therapy, the acute disease can become chronic and lead to a very difficult course of disease progression ultimately requiring amputation of the affected areas. Antibiotics are ineffective here, because pathogens are encapsulated in biofilms on the bone that cannot be eliminated by antibiotics in conventional dosages. In chronic cases, surgical treatment is generally required.
