Causes

Osteitis is caused by bacterial contamination of the bone tissue in open fractures and during surgery of the skeleton. Pathogens can also be flooded in via the bloodstream (osteomyelitis in children or the propagation of an adjacent infection) and trigger especially acute bone infections.

In rare cases osteomyelitis may also be caused by fungi or viruses.
